Short hops, airport runs and province trips are three different problems. Here is how each one usually works.
In the city
Ride-hailing apps cover the main cities and take the negotiation out of a short trip. Street tuk-tuks are still useful when you are outside app coverage or want a driver to wait for you — agree the price before you get in, and agree it again if the plan changes.
Airport runs
Book ahead if you are arriving late, travelling with several bags or bringing family. The saving from flagging something down at the terminal is small; the cost of getting it wrong at midnight is not.
Between provinces
You have three broad options: a coach, a shared minibus, or a private car with a driver. Coaches are the cheapest and slowest. A private car costs more but lets you stop, and it is usually the right answer for a family or a day trip that has to come back the same evening.
Practical notes
- Journey times are dominated by road conditions and the weather, not distance — add a margin in the wet season.
- Keep your destination written in Khmer on your phone.
- For a full day out, hiring the driver for the day is usually simpler than arranging each leg.
