Health cover as a foreign resident: the questions to ask first

Cover sold to residents varies far more than the brochures suggest. Four questions separate the policies.

1. Where would you be treated?

Ask which hospitals the policy has direct billing with, by name. A policy that reimburses you later is a different product from one where the hospital bills the insurer.

2. Does it include evacuation?

For anything serious, treatment may mean a flight to a regional centre. Check whether evacuation is included, who decides that it is needed, and whether it covers the return journey.

3. What is excluded, and for how long?

Look for waiting periods, pre-existing condition rules and any activity exclusions. These are where claims are most often refused.

4. What happens when you renew?

Ask whether premiums are re-rated on your claims history, and whether cover continues if you change visa status or move country.

This is a summary of what to ask, not advice on which policy to buy — the right answer depends on your circumstances, and it is worth talking it through with a licensed broker before you sign anything.
